According to the annual report from the IEA Photovoltaic Power Systems Program published on May 14, 2026, in PV Magazine, global installed solar capacity reached approximately 2,974 GW by the end of 2025, with nearly 698 GW added in 2025 — representing a 16% increase compared to 2024. In other words, the world is now approaching the 3 terawatts of installed solar capacity. That’s a figure that would have seemed unrealistic ten years ago.

What does 3 terawatts actually mean? It has the capacity to supply billions of households with clean, renewable electricity. Furthermore, solar power now accounts for approximately 10.5% of global electricity demand—a symbolic milestone that confirms that solar energy has become a major source of power on a global scale.

Growth that is accelerating at an unprecedented rate

It took more than 40 years to install the first terawatt. It then took less than three years to nearly triple that capacity. This is proof that the global energy transition is accelerating exponentially. Consequently, countries and individuals who do not act now risk falling behind.

Which countries are leading this revolution? Thirty-five countries now theoretically exceed 10% in solar penetration, compared to 27 in 2024 and just 18 in 2023.
