Africa to Install 4.5 GW of Solar Capacity in 2025: Record Growth
Africa has just had its best year ever for solar energy. According to the Global Solar Council report published in PV Magazine in February 2026, the continent installed 4.5 GW in solar capacity by 2025—the highest annual growth rate ever recorded on the continent. And according to projections, this is just the beginning of a massive acceleration.

What does this mean in practical terms for Africans?
4.5 GW is enough energy to power millions of households with clean, renewable electricity. Africa, long considered to be lagging behind in the global energy transition, is rapidly changing.
A continent catching up
For years, Africa has been underestimated in global solar statistics. Yet the continent possesses an exceptional natural asset: some of the strongest sunlight on the planet, available year-round. African countries are finally beginning to take full advantage of this asset.
Which countries are leading this revolution?
South Africa and Egypt remain the undisputed leaders. But new markets are emerging rapidly—Morocco, Nigeria, Zambia, and Namibia are posting impressive growth rates. And beyond major government projects, it is the boom in residential and commercial installations that is driving growth.
Why the sudden acceleration now?
Two main factors account for this trend. First, the continued decline in the prices of solar panels — in particular thanks to massive Chinese exports to the mainland, as we analyzed in our article on Chinese Solar Panels in Africa. Second, the growing awareness among African governments of the challenges of electrification and energy independence.
Even more ambitious projections for 2029
The Global Solar Council predicts that Africa will install more than 31.5 GW of solar capacity by 2029. That is nearly seven times the installed capacity in 2025. This growth will be driven in part by major infrastructure projects—such as the 500 MW in Senegal — and by the millions of small installations in homes and businesses.
Can Africa really achieve this goal?
Experts are optimistic. All the conditions are in place: exceptional sunshine, falling costs, growing political will, and ever-increasing demand for electricity.
Gabon in This African Movement
Gabon is fully part of this silent revolution. Every solar installation built by WOW2000 directly contributes to this African energy transition. We have been helping Gabonese households and business owners achieve energy independence ever since WOW2000 was established in Gabon, using internationally certified equipment and a 3-year warranty at each facility.
