Solar and wind power will dominate the global energy market in 2025: what about Gabon?

A report published on April 23, 2026, in PV Magazine by the International Solar Energy Society (ISES) has just confirmed what many had suspected. The global energy transition is now irreversible. And solar power is its main driver.
What exactly does this report reveal? These figures are staggering. In 2025, solar and wind power provided about six times more new generation capacity than all other energy sources combined—coal, natural gas, nuclear, hydropower, and all other renewable energy sources put together.
A transition that is accelerating at a surprising pace
How did solar energy become so dominant? The answer can be summarized in three points. First, the dramatic drop in equipment costs. Second, the ease of installation on all scales. Finally, a growing global awareness of climate challenges.
Which countries are leading this revolution? The countries with the fastest per capita deployment in 2025 are Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, and the Netherlands. They reach between 3 and 4 MWh per capita per year. These countries are very different from one another. However, they have all made the same choice: solar power as the cornerstone of their energy future.
And what about nuclear power in all this? Net growth in nuclear power has been virtually zero. This has been the case for the past 30 years. There is therefore no sign of a significant nuclear renaissance. Solar power, on the other hand, isn’t waiting around.
What This Means for the Future of Global Energy
The ISES report is clear. Nearly all of the world’s new demand for electricity will be met by solar and wind power in the coming years. As a result, other energy sources will play only a marginal role in growth.
Will solar power generation soon surpass nuclear power? Yes. The report indicates that solar power already generates as much electricity as nuclear power does today. Furthermore, its growth rate is much higher. It is therefore only a matter of years before solar power definitively surpasses nuclear power.
Gabon in This Global Trend
Gabon has exceptional natural resources. It enjoys intense tropical sunshine year-round. Its geography is favorable. Furthermore, its population has an urgent need for reliable electricity.
